Mental Health Support Resources

The JET Mental Health Counselling Assistance Programme provides a partial subsidy (50%, up to 20,000 yen per year) for counselling costs incurred through consultation with mental health professionals in Japan not covered by health insurance. The coverage period for this year is 1 April 2017 to 31 March 2018. Please submit your application form for the subsidy through your contracting organization by 13 April 2018.

CLAIR also offers a free online service to provide JET participants with mental health assistance from professional counsellors using Web Mail and Skype. Please ask your contracting organisation for further information.

Period of Stay and Status of Residence Renewal

For JET participants who arrived in April, it is almost time to extend your period of stay, so please check the dates written on your Residence Card (especially JET participants in their 3rd year who will be reappointed for another term). For information on extending your Period of Stay or changing your Status of Residence, please refer to page 67 of the 2017 edition of the General Information Handbook (GIH).

Japanese Language Courses (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)

For those currently enrolled in one of CLAIR’s Japanese language classes, please remember to plan your study schedule ahead of time.

If you would like to change your course level, you can do so by accessing the contact information survey site, selecting your desired course, and then clicking the ‘OK’ button at the very bottom of the page. If you register to change your course level by 10 March, your new course will begin on 1 April.

Registration of Contact Information for JET Participants

Have you registered or updated your contact information?

All JET participants must access the link below and register their contact information. If you need to modify your information, you can do so via the same website. Please ask your contracting organisation supervisor to obtain your ID and password.

2017-2018 Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) Grant

JET Programme participants who have passed the JLPT N3 conducted on 3 December 2017 may be eligible to receive a grant for the test fee. To check your eligibility, please read over the Grant Overview and Eligibility Flowchart, accessible from the link below. If you meet the conditions, please submit your grant application directly to CLAIR. It must arrive by 9 March 2018.

Home Country Taxes

Personal tax affairs in one’s home country are the responsibility of each JET participant. Be sure to receive and keep your gensen chō-shū-hyō or Statement of Earnings. Please refer to page 63 of the 2017 edition of the General Information Handbook (GIH) for more details.

Lump-sum Withdrawal Payment

JET participants finishing their appointments in April may be eligible to receive a pension refund (lump-sum withdrawal payment). For more information, please refer to page 163 of the 2017 edition of the General Information Handbook (GIH).

JET participants finishing their appointments in 2018 should refer to CLAIR’s online ‘After JET Guide’ for information about how to prepare for your successor, move out of your apartment, deal with ‘reverse culture shock’, and prepare for your next career move.
