Mental Health Support Resources

The JET Mental Health Counselling Assistance Programme provides a partial subsidy (50%, up to 20,000 yen per year) for counselling costs incurred through consultation with mental health professionals in Japan not covered by health insurance. The period of coverage of the current fiscal year is from 1 April, 2016 to 31 March, 2017. Application for the above period must be submitted through contracting organisations and received by CLAIR by 10 April. If you have received counselling but not yet submitted your application, please do so as soon as possible. Please note that applications received after 10 April cannot be processed.

The JET Online Counselling Service offers professional counselling for free through Web Mail and Skype. Please ask your contracting organisation for further information.

Period of Stay and Status of Residence Renewal

To JET participants who arrived in April: It is almost time to extend your Period of Stay, so please double-check the date written on your Residence Card (especially JET participants in their 3rd years who will be reappointed for another term). For information on extending the Period of Stay or changing the Status of Residence, please refer to page 69 of the 2017 edition of the General Information Handbook (GIH), to be found at the following link.

Home Country Taxes

Personal tax affairs in one’s home country are the responsibility of each individual JET participant. Be sure to receive and keep your gensen chō-shū-hyō or Statement of Earnings. Please refer to page 63 of the 2017 edition of the General Information Handbook (GIH) for more details.

Japanese Language Courses (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)

Are you making progress in your Japanese Language Courses? You will not be able to access your account after the six-month period has ended, so please remember to complete your course and to download your Certificate of Completion as well as the PDF textbooks.

Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) Grant

CLAIR plans to offer the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) Grant for 2017-2018. The application period for the first test date (scheduled to be 2 July, 2017) is 29 March – 28 April, 2017. For those planning to take the N3, best of luck in studying for the test. Information about the grant for 2017-2018 will be uploaded to the JET Programme website at a later date.

Lump-sum Withdrawal Payment

JET Programme participants finishing the programme in April may be eligible to receive a pension refund (lump-sum withdrawal payment). For more information, please refer to the 2017 edition of the General Information Handbook starting on page 163.
