Important Information

Dress code

The dress code for the conference is business casual. No tie or jacket is required for the conference or the opening ceremony.

Digital Training Materials

The materials for this conference are mostly paperless. However, you will require writing utensils for the Issue Brainstorm Workshop on day 2. For all other sessions please bring your own electronic device and/or notetaking materials. Please be sure to fully charge your tablet or PC in your room before the workshops, and if necessary, bring spare batteries or a portable charger.

As a general rule, material will not be distributed but is available for download on this page in the schedule.

Name Tag

Please refer to your name tag for your elective lectures, networking and applied problem-solving groups.

Individual Consultations

PAs who requested individual consultations have been informed by CLAIR about their appointment time. However, depending on availibility, participants might be able to schedule a consultation on the day of the conference. If you are interested, please speak to a CLAIR staff member on the day.

Important Information

General

  • Please carefully read the JIAM Guide (please note this is the 2021 version. Some sections may no longer be relevant.)
  • If you have to miss a session due to illness, please notify CLAIR staff before the start of the session
  • Please turn off your cell phone or set it to silent mode during lectures.
  • You may bring drinks into the classrooms, but eating is prohibited.
  • You are not allowed to record or take photographs during the sessions. CLAIR staff may take photographs, which will be used in future PR brochures or other material.
  • Smoking is not allowed inside the building. Please use the dedicated smoking area.
  • After the conference sessions, you are free to go outside the conference venue, but you return by the JIAM curfew (23:00). Failure to observe the curfew may be notified to your contracting organisation.
  • Please be mindful of others when using shared space such as the bathrooms, shower rooms, cafeteria, etc.
  • You can use the package-delivery service (宅配便) from the store in the cafeteria. The store is open during cafeteria hours.

Accommodation

  • Pyjamas (sleepwear), toothbrush, toothpaste, cups, towels, soap and room slippers will not be provided in each room.
  • The rooms are equipped with a toilet, but bathroom and shower facilities are shared.
  • Non-conference attendees are not permitted to stay in the conference centre accommodation.

Speaker: Amy Burke (Inclusion and Diversity Analyst at Mercari Japan)
This presentation covers the basics of diversity, equity and inclusion and how an understanding of these principles can help PAs support their fellow JET Programme participants, as well as better understand those around them.

  • This session aims to take speakers from novice to polished presenters, offering tips and tricks for public speakers, creating presentations and giving participants an opportunity to practice their skills.

  • Speakers: Alexandra Cruz Akirov (Hiroshima PA), Stephen Fisher (Akita PA)
  • Two case studies from current JET-PAs, covering Orientation in Hiroshima Prefecture, and Leavers’ Conference, for participants leaving the JET Programme in Akita Prefecture.

  • Session 1: Mental Health in Japan and Self Care
  • Speaker: Teo Knives (Clinical Psychologist, Counsellor)
  • This presentation looks at common mental health issues that foreign residents face in Japan, the state of mental health care in Japan, and mental health resources that PAs can make use of in their own work.

  • Speaker: Christopher Rathbone (Foreign Associate at City-Yuwa Partners)
  • This session introduces some basic Japanese workplace laws, and examples of discrimination and harassment in Japanese case law.

  • Speakers: Monica Hudson, Magdalena Naslonski, Blair Evans (Okayama Prefecture) Ryan Gilbride (Aichi Prefecture)
  • Two presentations from current JET Programme participants. PAs from Okayama prefecture will look at rebuilding social networks following the impact of Covid-19. Followed by outreach to, and also by JET Programme participants in Aichi.

PAs will work in groups to brainstorm solutions for current issues that their peers are facing.

PAs will collaborate to tackle example scenarios that reflect common challenges they might encounter in their role. Groups will share their discussions and hear from CLAIR about further possible solutions.
