In the case that a JET participant is injured or becomes ill during the period of coverage, the JET Accident Insurance Policy allows JET participants to claim back medical costs incurred (minus a ¥5,000 deductible and within the limits of the policy). When receiving treatment, JET participants should first make use of their Social (Health) Insurance and then claim remaining costs with the JET Accident Insurance. The JET Accident Insurance also provides coverage for death caused by accident or illness, disability, and treatment for injuries and illnesses that occur during travel abroad or temporary visits to the JET participant’s home country. Medical costs incurred due to injuries or illnesses that happened before the start of the insurance policy are not covered. For coverage details, please see the JET Accident Insurance Policy Guide.

Filing a Claim
Necessary Claim Documents
【Claim for medical expenses, residual disability or rescue expenses】
Claim Procedure for a sickness or injury happening within Japan
- The JET participant pays for the 30% medical expenses not covered the Social (Health) Insurance (keep all receipts).
- The JET participant or his/her supervisor should promptly (within 30 days) contact the insurance company to report the date, time, place, cause, and symptoms of the injury or sickness, and the name of the treating hospital or clinic, to the insurance company. Please note that delays in notification may result in a claim becoming ineligible for payment.
- The insurance company will make a record of the details and explain how to make a claim for payment. The JET participant should submit all necessary documents.
- After the complete claim application is submitted, the claim will be investigated and, barring any issues, the insurance benefits will be remitted to the designated bank account.
Claim procedure for a sickness or injury happening abroad (emergency procedures)
- The JET participant must pay all of the medical fees him/herself and keep all the receipts or doctor’s notes. There is no money advance system.
- A claim must be made through the Social (Health) Insurance first. Contact your municipal Social (Health) Insurane office for instructions on how to do so.
- After making the claim to Social (Health) Insurance, contact the insurance company to claim the portion of the costs not covered by Social (Health) Insurance. Receipts of the medical fees are needed when applying for reimbursement of medical expenses. In case the original receipts were needed to claim the payment back to the Social (Health) Insurance, please keep copies of those receipts. You may need to provide a proof of reimbursement from the Social (Health) Insurance.
- After the complete claim application is submitted, the claim will be investigated and, barring any issues, the insurance benefits will be remitted to the designated bank account.
*The insurance company will not make direct payments to medical institutions in Japan or overseas
*CLAIR provides this outline for guidance, but all matters regarding the claim, including information on additional and supporting documentation to include with a claim, must be made directly to the insurance company.

FAQ
Who should make the telephone call to the insurance company to report an accident or sickness?
Either the JET participant or a representative from the contracting organisation. If the JET participant does not speak sufficient Japanese, a representative from the contracting organisation should make the call.
I made a telephone call to the insurance company, but could not make myself fully understood. Is there any other way for me to contact insurance company directly?
If you have problems informing the insurance company of the accident or injury, please have your contracting organisation supervisor contact the insurance company on your behalf.
I do not fully understand the claim procedures, so would like to transfer responsibility for such matters to my supervisor. How do I go about this?
A JET participant can receive assistance from their contracting organisation regarding claim procedures or in making telephone calls to the branch office, but other steps such as completing documents, must primarily be taken by the JET participant.
