I was able to once again feel the difference between working in the public sector versus the private sector. In particular, there was a vast difference in aspects such as the company culture, goals, atomosphere, and working style. Since I had been unsure whether to pursue a career in the private sector or the public sector, this experience was very helpful for my future career decision making.

Why did you decide to participate in the JET Internship Programme?

As I thought about my post-JET career path, I wanted to experience the culture and working style of Japanese private-sector, companies which are diffrent from the public sector organisation which I currently work in.

What type of work did you experience during the internship?

I supported company matching for an overseas IT and AI talent internship program that was ongoing at the time, and conducted research related to identifying and developing new business initiatives.

What did you get out of the programme & how do you hope to use this experience in the future?

I was able to once again feel the difference between working in the public sector versus the private sector. In particular, there was a vast difference in aspects such as the company culture, goals, atomosphere, and working style. Since I had been unsure whether to pursue a career in the private sector or the public sector, this experience was very helpful for my future career decision making.

Additionally, through my assigned duties, I was able to gain knowledge about IT, AI and their industry trends as well as learn about hiring trends of overseas talent among Japan's IT and AI companies. Since I normally do not have many chances to work with the IT and AI industries, I did not have much prior knowledge about it. However, I believe I can make use of this opportunity to engage with a new industry and companies when considering my future career plans.

A few words to JET Programme participants who might consider participating in the internship in the future:

If there is a work sector that you are interested in, you should definitely try participating in the internship programme. There was a significant difference between what I imagined the internship would be like compared to what I actually experienced. Being able to see both the positive aspects and challenges allowed me to truly understand the industry firsthand, and it became a valuable experience that helped me gain a concrete understanding of the job itself. I hope you will take on the challenge as well!
