As part of the JET Programme 40th Anniversary celebratory events, CLAIR held a photo contest inviting all current and former JET Programme participants to submit photos taken during their time on the programme! We sought to help current and former participants rekindle and continue their connection to Japan, while also promoting the appeal of the programme through photography that captures the essence of it.
The contest, held between 1 May 2026 and 31 July 2026 – saw over 700 participants submit over 1500 photos taken all over Japan, showcasing local charm, unique experiences and vivid memories which exemplify their connection to Japan and the people they met here.
The over 1500 submissions went through three rigorous rounds of judging, culminating in a final decision made by a committee of experts, based on their creativity, narrative, emotional resonance, appeal, artistry and technical merit. The selected photos are those that capture "that moment" discovered through the JET Programme experience- an experience that can be a turning point in one's life, and one that illustrates the local charm and warm connections felt by the participant.
The award winners of the contest, shown below, will be recognised for their achievements at the JET Programme 40th Anniversary Commemorative Ceremony, scheduled to be held on 2 November 2026.

Clash of the Titans
📍 Minamidaitojima, Okinawa
Original (English)
In my years on Minami Daito Island, I participated in their annual sumo tournaments to find the best sumo wrestlers on the island. The challenges tested my willpower, grit and determination, and left me with a newfound respect for sumo culture. Although I didn’t win every match, the once in a lifetime experience taught me to value mental resilience, as matches were in quick succession and generally over quickly, offering no time to dwell on past mistakes.

Ducklings
📍 Uchiko, Ehime
Original (English)
I was fortunate to live in an apartment with stunning balcony views across the town and beyond. This particular morning, the moody weather was offset by an orderly procession of yellow umbrellas on their way to the local elementary school. I admire the sense of community and independence promoted by this practice, but it was a useful timekeeper too; if I hadn’t finished my morning coffee by the time the kids came by, I needed to get a move on.

Happy Rice Planters
📍 Izumo, Shimane
Original (English)
I took this photo in Izumo, Shimane Prefecture. When the weather permitted, I often ate lunch outside of one school near this rice field. One spring day, I saw these women planting rice, and they seemed unfazed by the rain and mud. In this photo, you can see four of the women smiling, and I am sure that I smiled back and thanked them for letting me photograph them. Their smiles while working reminded me to be grateful for the rain and for finding joy even when ankle-deep in mud.

Before The Storm
📍 Minobusan Kuonji, Yamanashi
Original (English)
I took this photograph in March 2020 at Minobu Kuonji Temple, one of my favorite places in Yamanashi. Nestled in the mountains, it is still home to Buddhist monks. Every visit brought me a sense of inner peace (after climbing the temple's steep 287-step staircase). I remember my friend Fanny and I almost cancelled our trip as news of COVID-19 began to spread. Looking back, I see this as my last excursion in "normal times," just before the pandemic changed the world.

Friends for Life
📍 Iwataminami High School (Iwata), Shizuoka
Original (English)
Language? Age? There were no barriers. This past year, Mr. Matsuura and I were always together in the English Teachers' room, and this photo perfectly captures our everyday life: random stories and funny moments. Looking back, it is a bittersweet picture taken just a day before my last day at school, but I hope the echoes of our laughter will always remain in that room.

📍 Zamami Port (Zamami), Okinawa

In Okinawa, teachers are typically assigned to work on remote islands for at least three years. In Zamami Village, every March, the teachers who have completed their island service leave all at once. As part of a local tradition, students and community members gather at the port and jump into the sea as the ferry departs to bid them farewell.
I am now entering my final year as a Coordinator for International Relations. Thinking that the day may soon come when I, too, will be given such a heartfelt send-off fills me with a sense of sadness.
